Q: What's wrong with using the court system to resolve disputes?

A: Nothing, so long as it is the last resort. As former Chief Justice Warren Burger observed: "The notion that ordinary people want black-robed judges, well-dressed lawyers and fine courtrooms as settings to resolve their disputes is not correct. People with problems, like people with pains, want relief, and they want it as quickly and inexpensively as possible."

Q: Are there alternatives to judges, juries and litigation to decide disputes?

A: Yes. It is called Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR for short), which is any method by which a conflict can be put to rest, short of a courtroom trial. It is usually accomplished by either a private trial, called "arbitration," or settlement assistance, called "mediation."

John Blumberg is the director and principal mediator for Dispute Resolution Center. In addition to the cases where private lawyers selected him to resolve their clients' cases, he has arbitrated and mediated over two hundred litigated disputes for the Superior Courts of Los Angeles and Orange Counties.
